I've been there.

And here's what I learned.

With each failed attempt, I blamed myself and my lack of willpower. The more diets I failed to stick to, the more I loss confidence in my ability to ever get healthier.

I started seeing myself as "good" when I was on plan, and as being "bad" when I fell off the wagon.

With each new failed diet attempt, I got closer to throwing in the towel altogether, telling myself that maybe nothing would ever work for me. Maybe my goals just weren't achievable, and I started convincing myself that things "weren't that bad", even though I was miserable. I had no energy, no confidence or no motivation to actually do things that I used to love.

I figured I'd just have to settle for the life I had now, constantly jumping from from one diet to another, never staying consistent to anything or actually getting my health in check long-term.

And the most crippling of all : with each new cycle, my brain actually wired itself to set me up for failure next time. It remembers this sequence of events, thoughts and feeling and by default, I always felt into the same patterns. I started to expect diets to fail, but tried them anyways. I thought it was ME the problem. Why couldn't I stick to anything?

Without learning a new strategy that breaks away from traditional diets and weight loss plans (that only got me temporary results), I was destined to repeat this crushing cycle for the rest of my life.

My story

I used to be what I'd call a casi-professional yo-yo dieter.

I started dieting when I was 16. When I saw myself rapidly gaining weight as a result no longer training 20+ hours a week as an elite synchronized swimmer, I figured I'd do what everyone else was doing to lose weight : go on a diet.

I practically became a professional yo-yo dieter, trying to find the thing that would finally work for me. Low-carb, low-fat, paleo, calorie counting, 1200 calories, it, I've tried it, or at least considered it.

And some of them worked! I mean, I did lose and gain the same 20 pounds over and over again. The problem was, once the “end” arrived (if it ever did), old habits returned, along with extra pounds and feelings of guilt & disappointment.

I thought I kicked this “on-again/off-again” cycle

In university, I found running and got a FitBit. I started severely cutting my calories, exercising 2 hours a day and practically made "getting healthy" my full-time job. You can imagine that this way of eating, combined with my extreme exercising led to significant weight loss.

And to the outside world, (and at the time, to me) that was success!

But here was the problem…I was always tired, sore, moody, restless, foggy, anxious, and hungry (battling with carb and sugar cravings every day, especially at night). I felt exhausted, old, and hangry. It was the unhappiest I have ever been , but I didn't know another way. I was terrified that if I stopped dieting, I'd gain all the weight back and once again, would fall right back into my old habits that I had worked so hard to break.

Something needed to change. I needed to create new habits that would allow me to live a balanced, sustainable and enjoyable life.

My idea of healthy was painfully corrupt. My relationship with food and my body was the worse it had ever been. I would force myself to run every day and was stuck in a "good" VS "bad" mindset. It was all-or-nothing for me. Dieting stole years of my life from me, but the saddest part was skipping meals, passing up on family pasta nights, avoiding going to restaurants with my friends and forcing myself through workouts I hated every day.

I was trying so hard to be "healthy" and "good" in my efforts to lose weight, but turns out I was doing exactly the opposite. Dieting was the least healthy thing I was doing to my body.

Once I opened my eyes to what real, genuine and balanced health really was, it changed my life.

I became a certified Health Coach, opening my eyes to optimal health beyond the conventional fad diets. Most importantly, I learned why mastering your habits is at the foundation of all lasting health behaviour change and healthy weight management.

I now have a thriving Health Coaching business helping clients from all over the world pursue genuine health and reclaim their life without dieting.
